Nitsch Engineering Wins Two ACEC Engineering Excellence National Recognition Awards

On Tuesday, May 7th, Nitsch Engineering received two National Recognition Awards at the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC’s) 52nd annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala held in Washington, D.C.

The awards recognize Nitsch for “exemplary engineering achievement” on both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology North Corridor and the D.C. Water Kennedy Street Green Infrastructure projects. These projects first won ACEC Engineering Excellence awards at a local level.

The MIT North Corridor project received the ACEC Massachusetts Engineering Excellence Silver Award for the innovative approach to stormwater management, which included an uncommon modification to a standard bioretention basin – an approach that Nitsch Engineering called a landscape filter.

The Kennedy Street Green Infrastructure project earned the ACEC Metropolitan Washington Honor Award for a unique approach to stormwater management on the city block, which included 33 interconnected Green Infrastructure (GI) Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are designed so that one facility can overflow into the next, creating a long, slow path for stormwater to travel.

The projects are among 196 engineering achievements from a worldwide network of applicants being recognized by ACEC as the year’s examples of engineering excellence. A 30-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media, and academia acted as judges of the awards earlier this year. Award recipients were selected based on their uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and ability to generate excitement for the engineering profession.
