Life @ Nitsch

We all spend about one third of each weekday at work. Shouldn’t that time be spent at a company where you can be your authentic self, work with friendly colleagues who support you, and grow professionally?

What’s it Like to Work at Nitsch?

Nitsch believes that work can and should be enjoyable! We:

  • Encourage our staff to do work that challenges and excites them.
  • Support professional growth through education, mentoring, and professional society involvement.
  • Treat all employees with respect and recognize employee successes.
  • Recognize and support the unique needs of each employee through our work/life flexibility policy and hybrid work environment.
  • Provide a friendly and energetic environment on a day-to-day basis, and host frequent social events for fun and connection.

Many companies say they do these things, but we go beyond talking the talk – we really walk the walk, as our employees will happily tell you!

A Proven Great Place to Work

When it comes to saying a company is a great place to work, only one source really matters: the employees. That’s why Nitsch is so proud to have been ranked a great place to work every time we’ve submitted for an award that uses employee feedback as the primary source! This has included:

  • The Boston Globe Top Places to Work – highly ranked 2015 – present
  • ZweigWhite Best Civil Engineering Firms to Work For in the United States – ranked #2 in 2014
  • CE News Magazine Best Civil Engineering Firms to Work For in the United States – highly ranked 2013, 2006 – 2009
  • WTS Boston and WTS International Employer of the Year in 2006

Building and Maintaining a Value Driven Culture

A company’s culture isn’t just about parties and free snacks (although we do regularly provide both!). Rather, a company’s culture is about how their values are reflected in their actions and behaviors. At Nitsch, we are committed to intentionally maintaining our unique (and beloved!) culture – which means that the best way to paint a full picture of our culture is to look at it according to our eight core values.

Ethics

Ethics are the foundation of every decision we make and everything we do. This means that we are committed to doing the right thing for the right reason. One key example of ethics in action at Nitsch can be found in our commitment to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment where all voices are valued and heard.

Transparency

As an employee, it’s frustrating when you feel like you don’t know what the management team is thinking, or where your company is headed. That’s why Nitsch thinks it’s critical to keep all employees informed and engaged. We consistently update employees on the company’s financial performance, corporate news, and strategic plan progress.

Community Involvement

Nitsch is committed to making our communities stronger and more sustainable, and to supporting our employees in making positive contributions to our communities and the environment. Nitsch Cares, our employee-led committee that acts as a steward for our communities, coordinates our corporate charitable giving (including a donation matching program for employees), organizes fundraising initiatives, and plans group volunteer opportunities.

Continuous Improvement

We all have room to learn and grow, and Nitsch encourages our employees to do just that. Nitsch University (NitschU) provides employees with the opportunity to learn technical and business skills in a casual environment, while our Leadership Development Program and career pathing provides many opportunities for employees to build and develop their leadership skills. We actively encourage employees to join professional societies, and support them in joining committees and participating in skill- and leadership-building programs.

Work/Life Balance

No two lives are the same, and we know that each employee has their own unique needs when it comes to pursuing work-life balance. For that reason, Nitsch has long provided an environment of respect and flexibility for our employees. Our Work/Life Flexibility Policy provides eligible employees with increased flexibility in their work schedule, with options that include flex-time, compressed schedules, and remote/hybrid work arrangements.

Quality and Safety

Our planners, land surveyors, and engineers make sure that quality and safety stay top of mind on all of our projects. To support them, our QA/QC committee works to provide consistency and cross-department communication on a wide variety of QA/QC topics. On the safety side, our clear safety protocols and checklists help employees feel confident and stay safe on project sites.

Client Care

Every company claims that they provide excellent client service – but our clients back that up by describing Nitsch’s services as responsive, quality, and collaborative. This client satisfaction is the direct result of the commitment that each employee makes to be a proactive advocate for their clients; Nitsch works with employees at all levels to provide them with the support and tools they need to do so.

Organizational Health

To be a truly great place to work, a company must have a strong financial foundation to meet the needs of today while being agile for the future. At Nitsch Engineering, we focus on running a profitable business and giving back to employees through bonuses when the company does well. But we also recognize that a company’s health isn’t just about the bottom line – it’s also about having a sense of community and belonging. Our internal committees and Employee Resource Groups – all of which have corporate champions – create supportive spaces and plan fun activities to benefit all of our employees.

A Commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action

In alignment with our established (and active!) commitment to driving equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging at Nitsch and within the engineering industry, Nitsch is committed to taking affirmative action to ensure that no individuals are discriminated against because of their race, color, religion, sex, marital status, ethnicity, national origin or ancestry, citizenship, age, disability, mental illness, veteran status, military service, sexual orientation, genetic information, gender identity, arrest records, or any other characteristic protected by law in the firm’s hiring practices, in employees’ performance evaluations, in pay rates, or in considerations for promotions or terminations. Nitsch has every intention of continuing to hire staff which includes qualified women, minorities, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and other protected classes.
