Four Nitsch Projects Win 2021 BSLA Design Awards!

The integration of civil engineering solutions into a landscape is central to Nitsch Engineering’s design philosophy – which is why we’re so thrilled that four of our projects were awarded 2021 Design Awards by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects (BSLA)!

The BSLA annual Design Awards recognizes projects located within Massachusetts and Maine that demonstrate excellence and reflect the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environment.

Audubon Circle, Boston, Massachusetts

Recipient of the 2021 Design Merit Award

Audubon Circle, Boston

Nitsch Engineering worked collaboratively with a multi-discipline project team – led by HDR with landscape architect Crosby | Schlessinger | Smallridge – providing land surveying, transportation engineering, and sustainable stormwater design for traffic operation and safety improvements to Audubon Circle. This project improves safety for the community and revitalizes the landscape which incorporates green infrastructure. The project also included improvements along Boylston Street and the design of a shared-use path next to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Fenway Station and along the railway.

Clippership Wharf, East Boston, Massachusetts

Nitsch Engineering provided land surveying and civil engineering services for Clippership Wharf, a new mixed-used development located in East Boston along Boston Harbor. Clippership Wharf consists of four buildings including 478 residences and 30,200 square feet of retail and public space, as well as a 300-space underground parking garage. On the team with prime consultant Lend Lease, architect The Architectural Team, and landscape architect Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio, Nitsch Engineering was responsible for the survey of the site, design of the site utilities, site circulation, groundwater recharge system, public and private street improvements, and the Boston Water and Sewer Commission 48-inch storm drain that traverses the site, as well as permitting assistance.

King Open School

Nitsch Engineering provided civil engineering services for the 273,000-square-foot King Open Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex, designed by architect William Rawn Associates and landscape architect Copley Wolff Design Group. The project is the second school in the country to achieve the LEED v4 Schools Platinum certification, and project goals were developed to align with the City of Cambridge’s commitment to a Net Zero Action Plan to transform the city into a Net Zero community by 2040. Nitsch Engineering designed the site utilities and green infrastructure solutions, and assisted with local/state environmental permitting efforts.

Climate Ready Dorchester, Dorchester, Massachusetts

Public engagement session for Resilient Dorchester

As part of a team led by SCAPE Landscape Architecture, Nitsch Engineering assisted with developing a neighborhood-level resilience strategy on the Climate Ready Dorchester project. We assisted with the development of coastal flood protection strategies and prepared a tool kit of green infrastructure measures to meet a variety of flood intervention needs which can be applied to different coastal types.
