John M. Michalak, PE

ENV SP
Director of Transportation Engineering

Like many other engineers, John’s interest in problem solving led him to a career in transportation engineering. For him, the process involves looking at issues from different perspectives, exploring several different options to address challenges, and then working with stakeholders to come to a consensus. This routinely requires balancing various modes of transportation including walking, biking, taking public transit, and driving, which can present a plethora of challenges and potential solutions. John’s passion for working through these issues to reach a viable solution for all roadway users has been evident throughout his career.

John has 29 years of experience in civil engineering related to the management and implementation of complex transportation and infrastructure improvement projects throughout New England. His experience includes highway and municipal roadway design, traffic improvements, streetscape enhancements, multi-use recreational trails, utility plans, environmental permitting, right-of-way acquisition, traffic management during construction, construction estimating and scheduling, and construction oversight. As Director of Transportation Engineering, John is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, business development, and administration of Nitsch Engineering’s Transportation Engineering department.

“There is no greater thrill than being a part of the design process from the initial planning stage to the final design through construction, and seeing the positive impacts your project has on the community once completed. It is so rewarding to hear my family say ‘there’s Uncle John’s bridge!’ or ‘let’s go for a ride on Uncle John’s bike path!’”

Outside of Nitsch

When he’s not working, John spends much of his free time outdoors. Whether he’s golfing, camping, doing yardwork, relaxing at the beach, or going for a walk with his wife and dogs, he loves to get outside whenever he can. He also enjoys sports (baseball, football, and basketball) and attending sporting events, concerts, and live shows.
