Building better communities with you

Shady Hill School Sustainable ProjectCambridge, MA

Nitsch Engineering provided civil engineering services associated with the design and construction of a new three-building arts center, a new gymnasium complex that consists of two gymnasiums and an underground parking garage, the redesign of the west entrance area, the restoration and expansion of the wetlands area, and the design of a functional pedestrian path. The 11-acre campus is located in a quiet Cambridge neighborhood and serves approximately 500 students between pre-kindergarten and grade 8.

For these projects, Nitsch Engineering provided building and roadway layout, grading, utility design (water, sewer, and drainage) and demolition, hydrant flow tests with the Cambridge Department of Public Works, and sedimentation and erosion control for the very tight site with a high groundwater level. We worked with the landscape architect to enhance the wetland area and incorporate natural treatment measures for stormwater wherever possible (such as a bioretention facility and a horizontal filter in the courtyard). We also prepared the Notice of Intent and permitted the project with the Cambridge Conservation Commission, which included attending hearings and preparing additional materials to address the Commission’s concerns. When abutters attempted to address traffic concerns by filing a project appeal with the Department of Environmental Protection, Nitsch Engineering coordinated with the project team to address the issues at neighborhood meetings. We provided LEED calculations for the stormwater credits to support filing for LEED Silver Certification. We also provided construction administration services for all three projects.
